House Lunches

Sample Menu Items

There are lots of room for variations:

Beverages: cold, mix of caffeinated & non-cafeinated, or ice tea, lemonade, juice... water is usually available on site all day in water filled jugs, or sometimes from a neighbor's hose)

Sandwiches: Lunch meat and cheese only, and/or a few peanut butter & jelly (for the occasional vegetarian). condiments (mayonnaise, mustard, etc.) are often brought in jars (with spatulas or knives) or squeeze containers to let folks add their own to their sandwich. Sandwich fixings rather than pre-made work well, this allows volunteer workers to choose what they like or can eat with less waste.

Cut-up Vegetables: celerey, carrot sticks, cucumber slices/sticks, sliced peppers, etc.

Fresh fruit (seasonal): apples, pears, bananas, grapes, oranges, watermelo ( with knife & cutting board)

Cookies of some kind (or perhaps chips, pretzels, crackers, etc.)

Paper Goods:

  • Napkins/roll of paper towels
  • Paper plates/cups/silverware (if appropriate)
  • Trash bags for rubbish
  • Plastic table cloth for serving area
  • Wet Ones - these are helpful for volunteers to clean up before eating

One or two card tables to place lunch items on: check with the volunteer coordinator to see if a table is already available on site.

In General: Volunteers get hungry pretty early, so lunch servers are recommended to be on site and setting up at about 11:15a.m. Lunch items can be brought to the site earlier in the day if coolers, etc. are brought to keep the food fresh.

Sometimes a church/group will choose to provide pizza - a variety of toppings are suggested - at least one- two with no meat toppings.

Ideally we would like to have a healthy, not-too-carbohydrate-rich items for the workers. Too much starch and that afternoon snooze becomes very appealing!
